Layouts
So its about time i looked into layouts. So I began to sketch these simple ideas that i feel would work.
I then began to work on the laptop using photoshop and illustrator to make my illustrations a reality. and came up with the idea of creating a simple background using a picture of clouds overlay-ed to give the background more depth.
However i have designed another cover that strips away the backgroun and for some reason i like beteer.
It plays on the idea of simplicity that I got form the sketches of Quentin Blake.Simple ways simple outcomes. Simple can be powerful.

Idea 3.
Playing with this font furhter i need a boundery box to really focuse the viewers eye towards the character in the font .....after sketching a few layout ideas i began to incorporate the idea of a peach squash. As in athe juices expelled from a peach and came up with an unique layout box which fitted right into the piece.
Idea 2.
Taking my font i began to play with the desing and moving it to overlay characters in the font I decided to overlay my chracter into the font. Which in turn gave me this.
It is simple imagery that is also typographically appealing.

Idea 1.
So taking this image of my chracter i have decided to subtley include it in my piece i just have to find the right font first . So i looked in these several fonts to see what would work. I found a simpl font named HSP that i feel best suited the novel.
3d character
So linking into the actual movie theme and looking into the animation side of the film I decided to create my own character. He is about 8 inches in length and made form simle modling clay. the chracter is ruff and unfinished but I actualy like this element to it.
Idea Generating.
So here are a few sketches of how I am going to generate ideas for this piece. Taking the original character produced my Tim Burton for the film, I have decided to make my own character.
I want him to be oversize proportionately inaccurate and unbelievable in its completion. These sketches represent some ideas I have for how the character should look and compares them to original character.

Resaerch 3.
So again still on the research stage I found this book cover by graphic designer Ron Wan. As this project is a typography class one I think is very relevant. The information of his webiste best explains this piece.
"James and the Giant Peach: Book Cover.
Redesigning the book cover of a classic childhood novel. Illustrating visuals that would captivate young children, but also to an adult-contemporary audience. The cover explores the variety of exotic settings within the story. The bold visuals play with the idea of size, weight, and strength, in reflection of James and his adventures."(taken from Ronwan.com)
I like its simplicty and how it conveys the book but through a typorahical nature. Might look further into this when designing my piece.

Reserach 2.
Ao after more research i have decided to post on British artist, Quentin Blake.
He is probly the most famous illustrated chose to illustrate novels my Roald Dahl. Similar to Nancy Ekholm Burkert, Quentin Blake style produces imagees that are watercolour based overlayed with ink. His styling is loose yet powerfully effective with a hint of simplicity.
Here is a collage of his work that i feel epitimises his style of drawing.

Research 1.
So after looking at these book covers I began to research the different artists and came across Nancy Ekholm Burkert. She was the original artist employed to illustrate the first edition of the novel.
Nancy Ekholm Burkert is an american born artist and illustrator who has captured the hearts of children and adults alike with her renditions of childrens novels and films like with James and the giant Peach and Snow white and the 7 dwarfs in 1972.
Her style of art demonstrates a comand of shading and texture through pencil and charcole combined with mixed elements of water colour and inks. I like using combined materials in my work and love to overlay my sketches with ink or in some case pen so I think this element of her work is useful to my research.

Research
I began my reaearch by looking into other book covers desined for the stroy and film. And came across these carefully selected few. All illustrated by world famous artists. I hope to gain a feel for the direction I want to take with this project from these covers.
The beginning
So we have been given this brief well actually the bried itself is a competiton for puffin books, to design a cover for the famous Roald dahl novel james and the giant peach. To start I want to give a basic insite into the novel.
James and the Giant Peach is a popular childrens novel created by Roald Dahl in 1961. The book tells the story of a young orphan boy who, after growin g a magical peach, befirneds unlikely heros in the form of insects and embarks on an adventure to save gis parents from a rino.
A pretty elaborate story line the book takes the reader into a world that only be decribed as a dream reality. The book was adapted in 1996 into movie form by Henry Selik and Tim burton.
